Coinage in Karystos began in 480 BC and continued until 427 BC when the Athenians banned coinage and imposed the Athenian coins.
Hercules is associated with Karystos by Dion the Euboean. In the middle of the 4th century BC, Karystos issued a series of gold coins with the head of Hercules, a fact that testifies to its economic prosperity and the cult of the mythical hero in the wider region.

Folklore Museum / Nea Artaki
The Folklore Museum of Nea Artaki was founded in 2014 by the Association of Artakians - Kizikinans.
The history of the city as presented in the museum begins with references to the old Artaki, such as Homer's reference to "Artakia Fountain" in Rhapsody K of the "Odyssey", or relevant references from Apollonius of Rhodes in his "Argonauts", as well as from Xenophon.
The museum's exhibits travel through time and tell the stories of the inhabitants. In the museum area, visitors can live for a while in a typical Artakian house. The purpose of the museum is to preserve history and folklore.
Το Λαογραφικό Μουσείο της Νέας Αρτάκης ιδρύθηκε το 2014 από το Σύλλογο Απανταχού Αρτακηνών – Κυζικηνών.
Η ιστορία της πόλης όπως παρουσιάζεται στο μουσείο ξεκινά με αναφορές στην παλαιά Αρτάκη, όπως η περί “Αρτακίας Κρήνης” αναφορά του Ομήρου στην Ραψωδία Κ’ της “Οδύσσειας”, ή σχετικές αναφορές από τον Απολλώνιο τον Ρόδιο στα “Αργοναυτικά” του, καθώς και από τον Ξενοφώντα.
Τα εκθέματα του μουσείο ταξιδεύουν στον χρόνο και αφηγούνται τις ιστορίες των κατοίκων. Στο χώρο του μουσείου μπορεί ο επισκέπτης να ζήσει για λίγο σε ένα τυπικό αρτακηνό σπίτι. Σκοπός του μουσείου είναι η διατήρηση της ιστορίας και λαογραφίας.
Hercules,
was born and raised in Thebes and was the son of Zeus and Alcmene. His mother Alcmene was married to Amphitryon, with whom they fled to Thebes because Amphitryon had accidentally murdered Alcmene's father, Electrion. Zeus took the form of Amphitryon and slept with Alcmene. As a teenager, he caused the war between Thebes and Orchomenus. As a reward for his victory against Orchomenus, he took as his wife Megara, daughter of the king of Thebes, with whom he had three children. Ira, however, drove him mad, and as a result, he killed his wife and children. Pausanias writes that in Thebes, near the gates of Electra, there was the tomb of the children of Hercules and Megara. Pindar mentions that these children were worshipped under the name "Alkaida" and honored with sacrifices and epitaphs.

γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στη Θήβα και ήταν γιος του Δία και της Αλκμήνης. Η μητέρα του Αλκμήνη ήταν παντρεμένη με τον Αμφιτρύωνα, με τον οποίον κατέφυγαν στη Θήβα, επειδή ο Αμφιτρύωνας είχε δολοφονήσει τον πατέρα της Αλκμήνης, Ηλεκτρύωνα, κατά λάθος. Ο Δίας πήρε τη μορφή του Αμφιτρύωνα και κοιμήθηκε με την Αλκμήνη. Ως έφηβος προκάλεσε τον πόλεμο μεταξύ της Θήβας με το βασίλειο του Ορχομενού. The athletic competitions held in ancient Chalcis reflected the athletic ideals of its inhabitants, as evidenced by inscriptions, representations of athletic competitions in vases and mosaics, and the athletic sites themselves.
One of them was discovered in the city of Chalcis and was identified as a palace. In antiquity, palaces were open-air or semi-open-air sports facilities, while nearby there were baths used by athletes. The palace of Chalcis can be linked-to Roman Titus, who mediated with the consul Manius Aquilion Glavrion in favor of the Chalcedans when the Euboeans gave a warm welcome to the king of Syria Antiochus III and gave him Chalcis as a base for his war (2nd century BC).
After his successful mediation, the people of Chalcis dedicated votive offerings and inscriptions to him, one of which states that the municipality of Chalcis dedicates the gymnasium to Titus and Hercules.

Hercules
once took part in an archery competition organized by the king of Oechalia, Eurytus. Oichalia was a town in Euboea, somewhere near Eretria. The prize for the winner was the king's daughter, the beautiful Ioli. So, Hercules came to Oechalia, took part in the games, won, but Eurythus did not keep his word. Angry, Hercules stormed his city, killed Eurytus and his sons, and took Ioli captive. He sent her to Trachina, where was his palace, accompanied by his assistant Lichas. He went up to North Euboea to Cape Kinaeus, where he built an altar to honor Kinaeus Zeus.

πήρε μέρος σε μια τοξοβολία που οργάνωσε ο βασιλιάς της Οιχαλίας Εύρυτος. Η Οιχαλία ήταν πόλη της Εύβοιας, κάπου κοντά στην Ερέτρια. Το τίμημα για τον νικητή ήταν η κόρη του βασιλιά, η όμορφη Ιόλη. Ήρθε λοιπόν στην Οιχαλία ο Ηρακλής, πήρε μέρος στους αγώνες, κέρδισε, αλλά ο Εύρυτος δεν κράτησε το λόγο του. Θυμωμένος ο Ηρακλής κυρίεψε την πόλη του, σκότωσε τον Εύρυτο και τους γιους του και πήρε αιχμάλωτη την Ιόλη. Την έστειλε στην Τραχίνα που ήταν το παλάτι του, με συνοδό τον βοηθό του Λίχα. Ο ίδιος ανέβηκε στη Βόρεια Εύβοια στο ακρωτήριο Κηναίο, όπου έχτισε ένα βωμό για να τιμήσει τον Κηναίο Δία.
Οι απόγονοι του Ηρακλή κατοίκησαν την περιοχή δίνοντας στο χωριό το όνομα του. Σύμφωνα όμως με άλλη παραλλαγή του μύθου χτίστηκε από τους Σπαρτιάτες προς τιμή του μυθολογικού ήρωα, θέλοντας έτσι να προστατέψουν τη Μητρόπολή τους από επιθέσεις εισβολέων. Το σημείο το διάλεξαν μετά από προφητεία του Μαντείου του Δελφών.
The descendants of Hercules inhabited the area giving the village its name. According to another variant of the myth, however, it was built by the Spartans in honor of the mythological hero, wanting to protect their Metropolis from invasion attacks. The site was chosen after a prophecy of the Oracle of Delphi.
According to the legend, after Hercules’s victory over King Eurytus, he killed him, his sons and stole his daughter Ioli, whom he fell in love with. When Deianira was informed by Lichas of Hercules' love for Ioli, she smeared some of the centaur’s Nessus toxic blood on Heracles' famous lionskin shirt. When Hercules put on the festive tunic to perform the sacrifice in honor of Zeus to the Cape of Kinaio, the poisoned blood of the Centaur poured out and stuck all over his body, burning it. Trying to peel the tunic off of him, it peeled off his flesh along with it. In his rage, he threw Lichas into the sea. The pieces of Lichas fell into the sea and Poseidon transformed them into Lichadonisia.

Προσπαθώντας να ξεκολλήσει το χιτώνα από πάνω του, ξεκολλούσε μαζί και τις σάρκες του. Πάνω στην οργή του γκρέμισε το Λίχα στη θάλασσα. Τα κομμάτια του Λίχα πέσαν στη θάλασσα και ο Ποσειδώνας τα μεταμόρφωσε στα Λιχαδονήσια.
Η θεά Αθηνά ζήτησε από τον Ήφαιστο να φέρει στην επιφάνεια της γης θερμά νερά, ώστε να ξεκουράζεται ο Ηρακλής μετά από κάθε άθλο.
Ο Ήφαιστος πάλεψε με τον Γηρυόνη και χτύπησε με το σφυρί του τα έγκατα της γης όπου ανάβλυσαν πίδακες θερμών ιαματικών νερών. Μετά από κάθε άθλο του ο Ηρακλής ανέβαινε στην Αιδηψό και λουζόταν στα ιαματικά νερά της. Έτσι ανακτούσε τις δυνάμεις του και ήταν έτοιμος για τον επόμενό του άθλο.
The goddess Athena asked the god of fire, Hephaestus, to bring warm, relaxing, healing waters to the surface of the earth so that Hercules could rest.
The thermal springs are the heritage of Loutra Edipsou, and according to the myth the precious water of the springs flowed for the very first time when Hephaestus beat the land with his hammer and Hercules would bathe in the hot waters before each labor to relax and regain his strength.
Hercules

Since then, he is considered the founder of the games, which are organized in his honor. The games were annual and were combined with the coming-of-age ceremonies of the males.

Ο Εύρυτος όμως δεν κράτησε το λόγο του και θυμωμένος ο Ηρακλής κυρίεψε την πόλη του, σκότωσε τον Εύρυτο και τους γιους του και πήρε αιχμάλωτη την Ιόλη.
Από τότε θεωρείται προστάτης των αγώνων, οι οποίοι οργανώνονται προς τιμήν του. Οι αγώνες ήταν ετήσιοι και συνδυάζονταν με τις τελετές ενηλικίωσης των αρρένων.
Drakospita is megalithic religious buildings in southern Evia, where ancient Greek deities such as Zeus and Ira were worshipped.
The construction of Drakospita is attributed to the Dryopes, after their expulsion by Hercules and the Malians, who occupied their fortified city on Parnassus. According to the legend, in Trachinia, Deianira helped Hercules by fighting alongside him against the Dryopes and was wounded in the chest.
The Dryopes then colonized Epirus, where a region was also called Dryopes. But they were driven out of there, too, by the Dorians of Olympus and Ossa. Eventually they migrated southwards and settled in Evia and the Cyclades.

Στους Δρύοπες αποδίδεται η ανέγερση των Δρακόσπιτων, μετά την εκδίωξη τους από τον Ηρακλή και τους Μαλιείς, που κατέλαβαν την οχυρωμένη πόλη τους στον Παρνασσό. Κατά τον μύθο, στην Τραχινία η Δηιάνειρα βοήθησε τον Ηρακλή πολεμώντας στο πλευρό του κατά των Δρυόπων και πληγώθηκε στο στήθος.
Στη συνέχεια οι Δρύοπες αποίκισαν την Ήπειρο, όπου μία περιοχή επίσης ονομαζόταν Δρυοπίς. Εκδιώχθηκαν όμως και από εκεί, από τους Δωριείς του Ολύμπου και της `Οσσας. Τελικά μετανάστευσαν προς τα νότια και εγκαταστάθηκαν στην Εύβοια και τις Κυκλάδες.
Hercules was born and raised in Thebes and was the son of Zeus and Alcmene.
His mother Alcmene was married to Amphitryon, with whom they fled to Thebes because Amphitryon had accidentally murdered Alcmene's father, Electrion. Zeus took the form of Amphitryon and slept with Alcmene.
As a teenager, he caused the war between Thebes and Orchomenus. As a reward for his victory against Orchomenus, he took as his wife Megara, daughter of the king of Thebes, with whom he had three children.
Ira, however, drove him mad, and as a result, he killed his wife and children. Pausanias writes that in Thebes, near the gates of Electra, there was the tomb of the children of Hercules and Megara.
Pindar mentions that these children were worshipped under the name "Alkaida" and honored with sacrifices and epitaphs.
Tο Λύκειον των Ελληνίδων ιδρύθηκε το 1911 από την πρωτοπόρο του ελληνικού φεμινιστικού κινήματος Καλλιρρόη Σιγανού-Παρρέν. Το 1998 το Λύκειο των Ελληνίδων Χαλκίδας θα αποκτήσει πλέον μόνιμη στέγη στο καταπληκτικής αρχιτεκτονικής αρχοντικό της Λίζας Μάλλιου, το οποίο ευγενώς παραχώρησε ο Δήμος Χαλκιδέων.
Σκοπός του Λυκείου των Ελληνίδων είναι ο σύνδεσμος των γυναικών των γραμμάτων, των τεχνών και των επιστημών. Η πρόοδος του γυναικείου φύλου, η προστασία και η υπεράσπιση του. Στόχος του η διατήρηση των ελληνικών εθίμων και παραδόσεων, των ελληνικών χορών ασμάτων και ενδυμασιών.
Για την πρόοδο του γυναικείου φύλου το Λύκειον των Ελληνίδων ανέπτυξε δράση για τη χειραφέτηση των γυναικών μέσω της παιδείας και της εργασίας.
Για την αναγέννηση και διατήρηση των ελληνικών εθίμων και παραδόσεων το Λύκειον των Ελληνίδων ανέπτυξε στα δραστηριότητες σχετικές με τις παραδοσιακές τέχνες (χορό, μουσική και τραγούδι, ενδυμασία, οικοτεχνία, χειροτεχνία), οι οποίες βρίσκονται πάντοτε στην πρωτοπορία σε ό,τι αφορά στη διάσωση και ανάδειξη της ελληνικής παράδοσης.Οι πρώτες αποκτηθείσες φορεσιές του Παραρτήματος Χαλκίδας είναι από την ευρύτερη περιοχή της Αγίας Άννας Ευβοίας.
Το Λύκειον των Ελληνίδων αριθμεί 22 τμήματα στην Αθήνα, 50 παραρτήματα σε όλη την Ελλάδα, 17 γραφεία-Λύκεια στο εξωτερικό,και περί τα 15.000 μέλη.
Η πολύπλευρη δραστηριότητα του αποτυπώνεται στο ετήσιο Δελτίο του επιβεβαιώνοντας την αξία μιας δράσης που παραμένει μέσα στον χρόνο διαρκής και επίκαιρη, παραδοσιακή αλλά και διαρκώς εξελισσόμενη.
The Lyceum of Greek Women was founded in 1911 by the pioneer of the Greek feminist movement, Kalliroi Siganou-Parren. In 1998 the Lyceum of Greek Women of Chalkida will now have a permanent home in the amazing architectural mansion of Lisa Malliou, which was kindly donated by the Municipality of Chalkideon. The aim of the Lyceum of Hellenic Women is to connect women of letters, arts, and sciences, and the progress of the female gender, its protection, and defense. Its aim is the preservation of Greek traditions, Greek dances, and costumes. For the advancement of the female gender, the Lyceum of Greek Women developed action for the emancipation of women through education and work. For the revival and preservation of Greek customs and traditions, the Lyceum of Greek Women developed activities related to traditional arts (dance, music and singing, costumes, home crafts, handicrafts), which are always at the forefront in terms of the preservation and promotion of Greek tradition. The first acquired costumes of the Chalcis Branch are from the wider area of Agia Anna Evia The Lyceum of Greek Women has 22 sections in Athens, 50 branches throughout Greece, 17 Lyceum offices abroad, and about 15,000 members. Its multifaceted activity is reflected in its annual Bulletin, confirming the value of an action that remains constant and topical, traditional and constantly evolving.
Ο Ηρακλης
συνδέεται με τα νερά και τις θερμές πηγές καθώς μετά από κάθε άθλο κατέφευγε στην Αιδηψό για να ξεκουραστεί και να γιατρευτεί. Επίσης, ο Στράβωνας και ο Πλούταρχος σχετίζουν τον Ηρακλή με την Αιδηψό.
Στην περιοχή βρέθηκε μαρμάρινη πλάκα με αναπαράσταση των συμβόλων του Ηρακλή, με τη λεοντή και το τόξο. Στον χώρο του Υδροθεραπευτηρίου, όπου βρέθηκε ἡ πλάκα, βρέθηκαν και δύο ενεπίγραφα βάθρα. Ο χώρος ταυτίζεται με το Ηράκλειον, ιερό δηλαδή προς τιμήν του Ηρακλή. Μερικά από τα ογκώδη εκθέματα βρίσκονται στους χώρους υποδοχής, στο ισόγειο.
Στο χώρο υποδοχής εκτίθεται η πλάκα με τα σύμβολα του μυθικού ήρωα Ηρακλή, το τόξο και τη λεοντή και υπερφυσικό άγαλμα ιματιοφόρου άνδρα του 2ου - 3ου αιώνα μ.Χ.. Στον ημιώροφο, στον προθάλαμο της αίθουσας που εκτίθεται η συλλογή, βρίσκεται θραύσμα επιτύμβιας στήλης του 4ου αιώνα π.Χ. από τα Γιάλτρα, που παρουσιάζει γυμνό νέο και τμήμα ρωμαϊκού αγάλματος του Ηρακλή.
Hercules
is associated with the waters and the hot springs as after each labor he would resort to Edipsos to rest and heal. Strabo and Plutarch also associate Hercules with Edipsos. A marble slab was found in the area with a representation of the symbols of Hercules, with the lion and the bow.
In the area of the Hydrotherapy Centre, where the plaque was found, two inscribed pedestals were also found. The site is identified with the Herakleion, a sanctuary in honor of Hercules. Some of the massive exhibits are located in the reception areas on the ground floor. The reception area displays the plaque with the symbols of the mythical hero Hercules, the bow and the lion, and a statue of a man in harness from the 2nd-3rd century AD.
On the mezzanine floor, in the hallway of the room where the collection is displayed, there is a fragment of a 4th century BC tombstone from the Yaltra, showing a naked young man and part of a Roman statue of Hercules.
Ο Ηρακλής,
αφού έφυγε από το Κηναίο και έχοντας αφόρητους πόνους λόγω του δηλητηριασμένου αίματος του Κενταύρου με το οποίο τον τιμώρησε η Δηιάνειρα για τον έρωτα του για την Ιόλη ανέβηκε στο βουνό Οίτη.
Εκεί ο σύντροφος του Ποίας άναψε τη φωτιά που ο ίδιος ο Ηρακλής είχε προετοιμάσει. Ως ανταμοιβή ο Ηρακλής του έδωσε το τόξο και τα βέλη του. Στο σημείο, «Πυρά Ηρακλέους», δημιουργήθηκε ιερό, στο οποίο τελούνταν δοξασίες και θυσίες.
